  1. Is a Ebmaj7 a tritone substitution for Am7?

    • I wouldn’t look that deep into this one 🙂 Normally tritone substitutions are used on dominant chords, and neither Ebmaj7 or Am have a dominant function. I think they chose these three chords because they wanted to convey an uplifting feeling, and upwards intervals of 4th always sound uplifting. From F to Bb you go up a perfect 4th, from Bb to Eb you also go up another perfect 4th.

      Then they may have added maj7 to every chord in order to make them shine with good vibes and no tension, avoiding for that reason dominant 7 chords or similar. Every chord works as its own tonic (I), and every tonic is floating a little higher than the previous one.

      So when you’re listening to it, you have the impression of floating, always a little higher, and never being dragged somewhere you don’t want to be 🙂
